Scandi Sweets and Dogs

Back-tracking a little, 2012 was the Year of the Dog, not in relation to the Chinese zodiac (2012, year of the dragon) but it was the year when so many people around me became responsible dog owners. It was as if a “buy a dog” switch flicked inside everyone’s head. While I wasn’t overcome with the desire, I loved seeing it happen around me. There were so many new puppies to meet and go on play dates with, minus the hard part of looking after them. Lucky me 🙂 Here are some puppy pals ->

While reaping the benefits of this new dog craze … I was dreaming of Scandinavian Sweets.

The combination of these two very different things, Dogs and Scandinavian sweets, resulted in a three piece illustration set: Scandi Sweets.

The set is now available at my print shop: http://society6.com/makotokoji

Pudding Pretzel – (origin Germany) accompanied by maiden and German Dachshund.

It has been a crazy March and it’s going by so quickly!

A bit of news:

I’ll be releasing fresh new prints over the next few weeks, so stay tuned. You can also  get free shipping until the 17th of March if you use this link: http://society6.com/makotokoji?promo=899f22

To celebrate, here is a new illustration: Stockholm Blend.

I’ve never been to Stockholm but have been fascinated with Scandinavian countries. The illustration was inspired by a delicious tea called Stockholm Blend. It’s a  black tea which was originally blended in Stockholm (hence the name), with orange peel, safflowers, calendula blossoms, rose petals, vanilla and apricot (all really warm orange tones). Romanticizing/imagining how it would feel in a cozy cafe in Stockholm, crowed by Scandinavian animals.  To think it all started with a cup of tea 🙂

Birdy & Bee Bee

To start the year, I was commissioned by a friend to illustrate her parents’  pets, as a gift to them.

Birdy is a Ruby King Charles Cavalier and Bee Bee,  a British Short Hair. The unlikely duo are the best of buddies and I was super excited to illustrate them. I used gouache, a medium I like more after each use, for the final piece.

Here’s how it turned out.

Griffith University Bachelor of Animation 25th Anniversary and Art for Spine Charity Auction

I’ve been such a neglectful blog parent. I’m sorry but I am here now.

I have been super busy the last couple of months working on many exciting projects which I can’t wait to share with you. But the thing is I can’t share them yet. (But I will as soon as I’m able!)

So for now, I will post a few things from the end of 2012.

Griffith University celebrated 25 years of their Bachelor of Animation! To celebrate this milestone, the lovely staff at GFS and many dedicated students (past and present) organised a week of special screenings, guest speakers and an exhibition. The exhibition showcased student works created as a part of the course, alongside work that’s been created by them now, post-graduation.  I went back up to Brisbane for this event and it was lovely to catch up with everyone and to meet people from different generations of the course. It was amazing to see so much talent and diversity displayed in the exhibition and to hear about the different journeys people have taken since their time there.

Here’s an interview I did for the event ->

and my contribution to the Exhibition. A celebratory piece with Griffith colours red and white 🙂

One of my faves. Hand painted cel by Xin Li

I’d also like to share this watercolour piece, created as a donation  for a wonderful organisation called Art for Spine. I found out about them through my brother, who was working with them at the time. They are an organisation focused on raising funds to provide resources and new experiences for people with spinal cord injuries. Their Annual Art Auction is their main fundraising event, where artists from different disciplines donate artwork. The 2012 Auction raised close to $60000! Such an amazing effort.  I’m happy that I was able to participate and help out in this little way 🙂

Exciting news coming soon, so stay tuned!
